Just as the world was learning who Justin Bieber was, MTV News caught up with the shaggy-haired singer in September 2009. He was gearing up to release his debut album, My World, and plotting his pop-world domination. In the year and a half since that interview, Bieber has done the nearly impossible, launching himself into the pop mega-sphere.
In the chat, Bieber recalled how he and his manager, Scooter Braun, met and eventually got big names interested in signing the teen.
"My manager found me on YouTube. He flew me out to Atlanta for the first time — I'd never actually been on a plane before. He flew me to Atlanta where i was going to the studio to meet some people," he recalled.
"And Usher happened to roll up in his Range Rover. I ran up to him, and I was like, 'Usher, I love your songs. Want me to sing you one?' The politest possible way he could say no, he did. ... I took the hint. I didn't get to sing for him: He had to run into a studio session."
But later, Usher was beckoning the teen back to the ATL. "He actually watched my videos — after my manager got to talking to him — and was like, 'I should have let this kid sing,' and flew me back to Atlanta where I got to sing for him in a proper setting. A week later, I had a meeting with Justin Timberlake, who also wanted to sign me, so they both kind of wanted me."
As the story goes, Bieber went with Usher, and the two never looked back.
"As far as Usher being my mentor, he's definitely given me words of wisdom. I hear it from everybody, but definitely to hear it from Usher is great, just to stay humble and grounded is very important," he explained.
"There's a lot of people, especially young stars, that have gone down the wrong path, and I definitely plan to stay humble and stay grounded and keep my family first, because that stuff really is important in life."
On Friday, Justin Bieber's 3-D documentary, "Never Say Never," opens. The film takes a look at how the teen star worked to hit it big. MTV News has been chatting with him along the way, from the time he first burst on the scene in 2009 until now, as he embarks on a huge 2011 that will include a tour and more new music.

Usher Says New 'Rev Pop' Project Is A 'Movement'
Singer teases his new project by pointing to past hits like 'Yeah!' and 'OMG.'By James Montgomery
Usher
Photo: MTV News
With the success of songs like "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love," "Hot Tottie" and "OMG," Usher had himself a fairly massive 2010. But rather than rest on his laurels, he's looking to build on his big year, not with an album, but with a "movement."
It's something he's calling "Rev Pop" — or, simply, "Rev" — and though he's already teased his idea in a video with David Guetta (Akon is also involved), he has yet to speak in full about it. So when MTV News caught up with Ush before the 53rd annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles at the (Belvedere) RED launch party, we asked him about his next musical endeavor. And though he didn't reveal much, he did let it be known that "Rev" isn't exactly something new. In fact, he's been doing it for a while now.
"I'll give it to you this way: At a later date, I'll tell you more about Rev Pop, but if I were to give you a flash: I've done it before, I did it with 'Yeah!' " he said, "taking a cultural experience, and also worldwide recognition of a feeling, and putting the soul in the middle of it. Not allowing it to shift heavily to R&B genre, or pop. I did it again with 'OMG,' once again putting the soul in the middle of it, which was an electric-pop experience, with the soul.
"It's bringing those elements together to tell a story, that was born here," he said, gesturing toward his heart, "And that's what Rev Pop is. There's more, I mean, I could really elaborate, but that's just what I'm going to tell you right now. 'Rev' is what it's called ... the movement is called Rev."
Usher wouldn't say just when his fans would be getting their first taste of Rev, but whenever they do, it sounds like they're going to be impressed ... if not a little shocked.
"Stay alive," he smiled, "Because you're definitely going to be in for a surprise."

For all the nonsensical zaniness, toilet humor and general buffoonery audiences can expect when heading to see the Danny McBride/ James Franco buddy comedy "Your Highness" this weekend, it's always nice to know that the stars and filmmakers involved have methods to their madness.
When MTV News caught up with chief mischief-makers McBride and Franco while promoting their R-rated action comedy, we asked them to explain the film's varying tones and cross-genre references.
"It was important for us to skip the spoof aspect of this," said McBride, who plays the bumbling slacker Thadeous. 'Hangover Part II' Trailer Pulled, Simulated Monkey Sex To Blame?
The promo reportedly was removed from theaters because it hadn't been properly evaluated by the MPAA ratings association.By Gil Kaufman

There was plenty to love in the raucous trailer for the anticipated comedy sequel "The Hangover Part II." But, apparently, the sight of a monkey in a simulated sex act was too much. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the trailer for the film starring Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms and Justin Bartha has been yanked from theaters after it emerged that it had not been appropriately evaluated by the Motion Picture Association of America.
"In our haste to meet the placement schedule for this trailer, we failed to properly vet the final version with the MPAA. We acted immediately to correct the mistake and removed the trailer from screens," Warner Bros. said in a statement. The MPAA is in charge of making sure movie ads do not run afoul of the movie rating system.
While Warner Bros. would not reveal what was being tweaked in the R-rated film's trailer — which was being shown in front of the PG-13 movie "Source Code" — an unnamed insider said the scene in which a monkey sucks on a water bottle hidden under an old man's sarong was probably the issue.
The scene was the big finish in the two-minute-and-20-second trailer, in which Helms, Galifianakis and Cooper are seen hanging with a monkey that they've managed to pick up after a wild night in Bangkok, Thailand. The segment shows Galifianakis joking around on a bus by sticking the bottle under the pants of an old man sitting next to him.
"When a monkey nibbles on the wenis, it's funny in any language," Galifianakis' character declares.
A revised version of the promo will roll out on April 15 and will be screened before "Scream 4," which also is R-rated. "The Hangover Part II" opens on May 26.

Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj Tapped For Japan Aid Compilation LP

Some of pop music's biggest artists, including Justin Bieber, Rihanna and Nicki Minaj, are lending their tunes for a good cause. On Monday (March 21), it was announced that Universal Music is rushing out a digital-only compilation album to raise awareness and funds for those affected by the 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan.
While the lineup and track list have yet to be finalized, other chart-toppers expected to be featured on the release include U2 and Bon Jovi. Lady Gaga may also appear on the album. Proceeds from sales will go to the Japanese Red Cross.
"We are doing it only digitally because it is faster, and this will be a worldwide release. The plan is to have it available later this week," a spokesperson for Universal Music said.
In order to maximize proceeds, the record label plans to find more acts willing to waive royalties that would have come from having their tracks appear on the compilation.
Universal Music is not the only music-industry player reaching to support Japan disaster relief. Most recently, the Black Eyed Peas announced that the music video for their tune "Just Can't Get Enough" would be used to promote awareness and funds for victims of the tragic event. The clip, which was shot in Japan one week before the earthquake and tsunami hit, finds the BEP bandmates traveling throughout Toyko.
Earlier this month, Lady Gaga designed a special prayer bracelet with all proceeds going to relief efforts. In just two days, the pop singer and her legion of little monsters raised more than $250,000.
For more information on what you can do to help with earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan head to MTV Act, or text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

Britney Spears Didn't Write Femme Fatale Tracks: Does It Matter?
Ke$ha, Ryan Tedder and other Spears songwriters defend the pop 'icon' from criticism that she didn't pen songs on her latest release.By Jocelyn Vena

Britney Spears launched her career as a fresh face with the perfect amount of girl-next-door charm and sex appeal and rocketed her way up to pop superstardom. She followed her debut, ... Baby One More Time, with a series of chart-topping albums, including her latest release, Femme Fatale. And while fans are loving the new album, some critics are making a fuss over Spears' lack of songwriting credits.
Spears didn't write any of the tracks on her 1999 debut, but by her second album, Oops! ... I Did It Again, she had was making some songwriting contributions. Over the course of five albums, she has co-written 17 tracks, including hit singles "Everytime" and "Me Against the Music." With Femme Fatale, Brit left the writing to others. And many industry insiders are defending the star for not taking credit for work she didn't do on Femme Fatale.
Songwriter Heather Bright, who wrote the track "Trouble for Me" on Spears' latest, gave Spears credit for not pushing to get credit for a song she had nothing to do with.
"I would just like to address one thing! The media is talking trash about how Britney didn't write any of the songs on her album ... HELLO! Wake up everybody! NONE OF THESE ARTISTS WRITE THEIR OWN SONGS!!!!!!" she wrote, before slamming a laundry list of stars who do seek credit for songs they don't write. Bright also praised pop stars who in fact write their own songs.
Like Bright, Ke$ha, who penned the Femme Fatale track "Till the World Ends," defended the pop star. Not writing any songs on the album doesn't make Britney any less of an artist, Ke$ha said.
"I think people should be themselves and be their own artist, whatever that means for her," Ke$ha said in an interview with MTV Canada. "She's an amazing singer, an amazing performer and she's an icon. I don't think that that means she has to write. I do write my own music, some people don't and it doesn't at all make them any less of a brilliant artist, obviously, in her case, an icon."
While Spears didn't write for her current album, she explained that it was important to pick songs that were right for her.
"I really like to choose songs that empower people and make them feel good about themselves, first and foremost. I have a team of people that I work with, Max Martin and Dr. Luke, that are amazing producers," she told MTV News recently. "They bring me a load of songs but usually I'm very quick with the way I work and the type of songs that I like. And if I like it, then I'll record it."
"Gasoline" songwriter Claude Kelly told us that Spears always knows what's best for her.
"She's very, very much in control of what she records, how she sounds, how she portrays herself on the record," Kelly said of Britney's process. "There's no grand master puppeteering — that's kind of a myth. She knows what she's going to cut. She's not going to sing anything she doesn't want to and she has this amazing ability when she gets behind the mic. It's like eye of the tiger."
Songwriter and One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder also gave props to Spears for not taking credit for music she had nothing to do with. "I love that Britney does that. She knows where she is, and she shows up to the studio and says, 'What am I singing today guys? Okay, cool! Let me look at it,' " he said. "So to me it's whatever, be thankful for what you have."

Lindsay Lohan Reportedly Offered Victoria Gotti Role In Biopic
Lohan was handpicked by Gotti for film about her family, sources tell TMZ.By James Dinh, with reporting by Eric Ditzian

Lindsay Lohan is getting another chance at a career revival as she's reportedly been tapped to play the role of Victoria Gotti in an upcoming family biopic about her mobster father John Gotti called "Gotti: Three Generations."
On Friday (April 8), TMZ reported that the 24-year-old actress beat out fellow Hollywood starlets Blake Lively and Sienna Miller for the role. Lohan was apparently handpicked by the infamous Victoria herself. But that shouldn't come as too much of a surprise as the report claims that Victoria is a "good friend" of the Lohan family and often spends time with them on Long Island.
When MTV News reached out for comment, a representative for the film said he "can't confirm nor deny that Lindsay is in discussions." In addition, the rep stayed mum on Victoria's rumored preferences for the role saying, "You'd have to ask Victoria Gotti."
While details surrounding the film remain under wraps, a press conference with John Travolta, who is confirmed to star in the film as the leader of the Gambino crime family, will take place in New York on Tuesday to announce casting.
Lohan is reportedly auditioning for "Superman" in Los Angeles and will fly to the Big Apple in advance of the press conference.
Lohan's portrayal of Victoria Gotti would mark the troubled star's first role since ending her four-month stint in rehab earlier this year at the Betty Ford Center. The actress still has her share of legal troubles to sort through.
In late March, Lohan turned down a plea deal in her ongoing felony grand theft case, choosing instead to a trial before Judge Stephanie Sautner. By going to trial, the "Mean Girls" star potentially faces both jail and prison time, which could interfere with production for the film. Lohan was dropped from the Linda Lovelace biopic "Inferno" last year after the film's director explained that "the impossibility of insuring her — and some other issues — have made it impossible" to move forward.
What do you think about Lindsay playing Victoria Gotti? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Jay Baruchel Joins Robert Pattinson In 'Cosmopolis' Cast
Baruchel will play Pattinson's boss in the David Cronenberg film.By Aly Semigran

Robert Pattinson just got a new (fictional) boss ... and it's Jay Baruchel.
Baruchel ("How to Train Your Dragon," "Knocked Up," "Undeclared") has joined the cast of "Cosmopolis," David Cronenberg's upcoming big-screen adaptation of Don DeLillo's 2003 novel, according to Deadline New York. The novel is a modern reinterpretation of James Joyce's "Ulysses."
In the film, Pattinson will play Eric Packer, a "financial wunderkind" in New York at the beginning of the 2000 dot-com bubble burst, who one day takes a major risk that could put his life in jeopardy. Baruchel, who is known for playing more reserved types, will take on the role of the company's shy founder who also acts as Packer's conscience in the film.
The actor, who turns 29 on April 9, can add "Cosmopolis" to his growing list of projects, which includes the sequel to "How to Train Your Dragon" and the hockey comedy "Goon".
Baruchel's casting adds to the already-diverse ensemble for Cronenberg's "Cosmpolis," which Pattinson heralded as a "great cast" that includes Oscar-winner Juliette Binoche, Samantha Morton, Paul Giamatti (who joked to MTV that he would "get to stalk" the "Twilight" star on set) and relative unknown Sarah Gadon, who will play Packer's estranged wife.
During a chat with MTV, Pattinson, who previously revealed that he immediately said yes to Cronenberg's offer to appear in the film, said of his co-star Gabon, "I've seen a couple of things she's done. She's really good. She has a great face."
Pattinson said he's currently preparing for "Cosmopolis" by "working with a dialect coach ... there's this very specific accent."
What do you think of the casting of Jay Baruchel in "Cosmopolis"? Let us know in the comments.

Beyonce Working With Kanye West Producer S1
'Power' producer tweets he's 'finishing up some monsters' after week in the studio with B.By James Montgomery
Beyonce
Photo: Getty
Beyoncé's already taken inspiration from the likes of Michael Jackson and Lauryn Hill, hit the studio with a list of producers that includes Ne-Yo, Sean Garrett and Jim Jonsin, and now, she's hoping to capture the surge of Kanye West's "Power."
B — who's already hard at work on the follow-up to her massive I Am ... Sasha Fierce album — just wrapped a week in the studio with producer S1, the man who co-produced "Power" and has logged time with the likes of Ghostface Killah and Erykah Badu.
S1 broke the news via his Twitter account and also posted a photo of himself and B over on his official site. And from the sound of things, the sessions, which took place in New York City, were definitely eventful.
"A couple of meetings then back in the lab with Beyonce today," he wrote in one tweet. "Excited to see what we're gonna create today after last night's session.
"Not going to bed anytime soon. Beyonce got us in here working and I'm loving every bit of it," he wrote in another post. "Finishing up some monsters ... everything is sounding really great and big!"
There's still not much information about Beyoncé's new album, though in an interview with "Entertainment Tonight" last year, she said that, this time out, she's aiming to "make [her] own genre of music." In a follow-up interview with MTV News, she clarified that statement, explaining that she's "mixing every type of genre that I love" on the new album, and added, "I'm not in a box. It's not R&B. It's not typically pop. It's not rock. It's just everything I love all mixed together in my own little gumbo of music."

Lady Gaga Gets Birthday Wishes From Friends, Fans
'You are all the present I need in the world,' she tweets to fans upon turning 25.By Jocelyn Vena

On Monday (March 28), Lady Gaga reached another milestone in her life, turning 25. And it seems that all her pals didn't forget their Queen Bee on her big day. In fact, the singer even got some birthday love from ... herself.
"Drawing on table at restaurant. If I had to give it all back, but got to keep my fans, that'd be ok," she wrote on Twitter. She included a photo of a drawing she made that reads "Happy Birthday Me" with hearts all around it.
As a birthday treat, her fans trended the hash tag "#bornthisday" in honor of their Mother Monster. In another tweet, she thanked her fans for making her a trending topic on Twitter in honor of her big day. "Thank you for trending #BornThisDay monsters! The sweetest tweet! You are all the present I need in the world. I'll be 25 in about 4 hrs!"

'Dancing With The Stars' Results: Wendy Williams Foxtrots Home
Talk-show host jokes about her lack of rhythm 'despite stereotypes,' after getting eliminated.By Kelley L. Carter
Wendy Williams and Tony Dovolani
Photo: ABC
There wasn't much of a surprise on Tuesday night's elimination show of "Dancing With the Stars."
In spite of all of the chatter about Kirstie Alley's quick fall on the dance floor on Monday night's show — the judges thought she and her partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, recovered
quite nicely — it was talk-show host Wendy Williams who was given the boot.
This week, the celebrities were challenged to dance to a song that told a story about themselves, and Williams chose a foxtrot to "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life," connecting it to her early dreams of having a radio career. The judges told her on Monday night that she lacked fluidity and thought that she took a step backwards from the previous week's performance.
The funnywoman (whose partner was Tony Dovolani) went out with a bit of graceful humor, joking about her 15-point score and her lack of natural rhythm.
"I'm probably the busiest person in terms of flying back and forth. In addition to that, I have a marriage, a child and a litany of other things to hold together," Williams said, talking up her hectic schedule with taping her talk show in New York while also dancing in Los Angeles, where the ABC reality show tapes. "But this has been a wonderful opportunity."
She also thanked Dovolani "for teaching me how to dance. Despite stereotypes, this is one black girl who can't do the running man! I got to do this in front of millions of people! With that said, I'll do the rest of the talking tomorrow, on 'The Wendy Williams Show'!"

'Harry Potter' Ending Is 'Emotional,' Jamie Campbell Bower Says
Bower says being part of the franchise is 'a real honor.'By Jocelyn Vena
Jamie Campbell Bower
Photo: MTV News
This June, "Harry Potter" fans will bid the series a final fond farewell as "Deathly Hallows, Part 2" hits theaters. With "Part 1" already out on DVD and Harry Potter: The Exhibition at the Discovery Times Square building in New York City, the series is not going out quietly.
One of the series' stars, Jamie Campbell Bower, admits he feels lucky to have been a piece of that very large puzzle.
"I was only on set for a very short period of time, and I only play a very small role in the film," he told MTV News when he stopped by to talk about his new Starz series "Camelot." "I suppose, you know, just for me personally, being able to be involved in something that is taking place in England for 10 years and something that has given people jobs and a great boost to the British film industry, that was a real honor."
Bower has appeared in two of the iconic films (both parts of "Deathly Hallows"), and he said that seeing it all come to an end has even more meaning for the film's principal stars, who have been there since day one.
"For the other guys in it, again, it's been a part of their lives for 10 years, and that's a big deal. I suppose maybe they didn't see it as a job, it just sort of became their daily life: Go to school, do your job and go home and have your fish and chips — 'cause we all eat fish and chips," he joked. "I can imagine it's exciting for them and emotional as well."

Lady Gaga Celebrates Birthday At Los Angeles Concert
Mother Monster tells the crowd at her show on Monday that her fans are 'the best birthday present you could give me.'By Kara Warner
Lady Gaga performs at Staples Center on Monday
Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images
LOS ANGELES — A Lady Gaga concert is unlike any other live music event for two reasons: First, Mother Monster obviously puts on one helluva show — passionate, energetic, etc. — and second, there's the amount of effort her most dedicated fans, the Little Monsters, put into their unbelievable, outrageous and scandalous ensembles. Braving the teeming masses in the floor section of a Gaga concert is like being dropped in the midst of a half-naked, sparkly, Lycra-filled Halloween parade.
So was the scene on Monday night at the Staples Center, where Gaga shared her blood, sweat and tears with the nearly 20,000 screaming audience members ... on her 25th birthday, no less.
"I'm going to kick your ass tonight!" Gaga declared after her opening number, "Dancing in the Dark," and at the start of "Just Dance." She challenged the crowd to stay on their feet and to be themselves, which became the theme of the evening.
"The Monster Ball will set you free," she said during a beat between "Just Dance" and "Fame." "You can be whoever you want to be."
Naturally, the crowd ate up every word Gaga spoke, particularly her words of encouragement and love for her fans.
"Thank you for the best birthday present you could give me," she said, indicating that the present was her fans themselves. "Thank you for still buying tickets to my show. Thank you for believing in my music."
And in between the heartfelt thanks, the Lady left room for joking around. She told the crowd that her dad had advised her to be extra careful during her birthday performance because her fans will throw gifts up onstage. "He said, 'Please be careful what you put in your mouth.' " Also, when one concertgoer indicated that they had brought her Nutella, she said she had to politely "rebuke" the gift because she had to prep for the "Judas" video.
Besides Gaga's words of wisdom and heartfelt thanks, of course, there was plenty of her chart-topping music. The major highlights of the show — in addition to a rousing "Happy Birthday" sung by the crowd toward the end of the evening — included "Born This Way," which Gaga performed twice: the first, a stripped-down version she delivered at the piano and accompanied with an inspiring story regarding a long-desired pair of ruby slippers and dreams that really do come true ("Someday someone will hand you a pair of ruby slippers!"); the second, her show-stopping second encore. Also very worthy of a mention were "Alejandro" — the choreography performed by Gaga's extremely talented and acrobatic core of dancers was incredible — the new ballad "You and I" and the always-killer "Bad Romance."

'Breaking Dawn' Leaked Photos Leave Studio 'Heartbroken'
Summit Entertainment addresses the leaks in a statement on Facebook.By Jocelyn Vena
Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in "Breaking Dawn"
Photo: Summit Entertainment
When very steamy photos of Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) on their honeymoon hit the Web, they were pretty much immediately scrubbed from the internet.
The "Breaking Dawn" production photos, along with ones in which Bella appeared to have been through some sort of vampire transformation (her eyes were amber-colored) had fans drooling for more and left the studio fuming mad.
"As some of you may know, pictures and screen grabs of 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn' as a work in progress have leaked on the Internet. We are extremely proud of this film and also extremely heartbroken to see it out there at this stage," reads a Facebook message from Summit Entertainment. "The film and these images are not yet ready or in their proper context. They were illegally obtained and their early dissemination is deeply upsetting to the actors, the filmmakers and Summit who are working so hard to bring these movies to fruition to you in November 2011 and November 2012."
The letter, signed by author Stephenie Meyer, director Bill Condon, producer Wyck Godfrey and Summit Entertainment, asks that the photos no longer be shared online. "Please, for those who are posting, stop. And please, though the temptation is high, don't view or pass on these images. Wait for the film in its beautiful, finished entirety to thrill you."
Summit released a photo of Bella clutching feathers in bed last November, and when a pic of Edward and Bella in bed together hit the Net, fans immediately went bananas.
The whole ordeal made Pattinson chuckle. "It's always awkward, in a way, doing it with anybody," he admitted to MTV News about having to shoot sex scenes. "But at the same time ... it really depends on how it's staged and stuff. It's like doing Twister."

Will Smith's planned "Annie" reboot might be facing a hard knock life now that director Ryan Murphy has left the flick.
The "Glee" creator had been attached to "Annie" since it was announced in early February, with Willow Smith set to star as the title character and her parents and Jay-Z on as producers. But now Deadline is reporting that Murphy has dropped out of the movie after "talks broke off."
Deadline did not say how the Smiths and their producing partner Sony Pictures will continue, but it can be assumed that they will pursue their current course and try to find a new director to develop the film. Both Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are locked in as producers, and Jay-Z is planning to handle the musical side of the project, so the movie still has strong legs to stand on.
Beyond his commitment to "Glee," Murphy has several other major musical reboots on the horizon. After the successful "Rocky Horror Picture Show"-themed episode of "Glee," reports started flooding in that Murphy had met with Fox 2000 about remaking the 1975 cult hit. He was also one of the directors mentioned when Universal started developing a "Wicked" big-screen adaptation last July.
Murphy's decision to pass on "Annie" might have something to do with a more pressing film commitment he's dealing with. In August he confirmed to MTV that he would be directing "The Normal Heart" in June starring Mark Ruffalo. He also has a $5 million open offer from Sony to reteam with Julia Roberts after the success of "Eat Pray Love."
